10 Days in Morocco: The Route We Recommend — and What We Would Skip

A realistic 10-day Morocco itinerary for first-timers: what to include, what to cut, and why drive times decide the quality of the trip.

The short practical answer

For most first-time travelers, a strong 10-day private route is Marrakech → High Atlas or Essaouira → Sahara loop → Fes (or reverse), with no more than two heavy transfer days. Skip stacking Casablanca, Chefchaouen, and Merzouga into the same ten days unless you accept airport-style pacing.

## Who this 10-day plan is for

First-time visitors who want cities, a taste of mountains or coast, and at least one Sahara night—without living in a transfer van. Couples and small private groups fit this pacing best.

## The route we recommend

Days 1–2: Marrakech medina and gardens at human pace. Avoid filling day one with a long desert push after an overnight flight.

Days 3–4: Either a High Atlas village stay (Imlil / Ourika side) or Essaouira for Atlantic air. Choose one—not both—in a 10-day frame.

Days 5–7: South toward the desert via the High Atlas or Dadès/Todra corridor. Plan for two nights in or near the dunes when possible.

Days 8–9: Fes medina depth. Arrive with daylight left; do not schedule a full souk day after a 10-hour transfer.

Day 10: Buffer / departure. Casablanca is a transit city for many flights—treat it as logistics unless you have an extra night.

## What we would skip

Do not force Chefchaouen into a Marrakech–Sahara–Fes loop in ten days. Do not promise Merzouga “and back” as a single daylight outing from Marrakech. Do not book a different boutique hotel every night—moving cost more energy than it adds.

## Driving reality

Marrakech to Merzouga is a full day with stops. Fes to Merzouga is likewise serious. Build lunch and photo buffers; children and luxury travelers need even more margin.
