Classic Sahara Desert Journey

Arrive in Marrakech, where your private driver welcomes you at the airport and transfers you to your riad. Depending on your arrival time, enjoy a first gentle walk through the medina, relax on the rooftop or simply settle into the atmosphere of the ochre city.

This first evening offers a warm introduction to Morocco, with the option of a traditional dinner in your riad or at a selected local restaurant. The journey begins in Marrakech before heading toward the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara.

Spend the day exploring Marrakech with a local guide. Visit some of the city’s main cultural highlights, such as the Bahia Palace, the Ben Youssef Madrasa, the Koutoubia area and the souks of the medina. Your guide introduces you to Marrakech’s history, architecture, craftsmanship and daily life.

In the afternoon, the pace can be adapted to your interests. You may visit the Majorelle Garden, explore artisan workshops, enjoy a hammam or take time to wander through the medina. In the evening, experience the atmosphere of Jemaa el-Fna square or enjoy dinner on a rooftop.

Leave Marrakech after breakfast and cross the High Atlas Mountains via the scenic Tizi n’Tichka road. The journey offers panoramic views, traditional Berber villages and dramatic mountain landscapes before descending toward southern Morocco.

Visit Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed fortified village famous for its earthen architecture and hilltop setting. After the visit, continue through Ouarzazate and the landscapes of the Valley of Roses toward the Dadès Valley, known for its red cliffs, kasbahs and impressive rock formations. Settle into your guesthouse for the evening.

After breakfast, continue through the dramatic landscapes of southern Morocco toward Todra Gorge, one of the region’s most impressive natural sites. Take time to walk between the high canyon walls and enjoy the contrast between rock, palm groves and oasis scenery.

In the afternoon, travel toward Merzouga and the dunes of Erg Chebbi. As the landscape opens into the Sahara, arrive at the edge of the dunes for your desert experience. Depending on timing, ride camels or transfer by 4x4 to your desert camp, then enjoy sunset over the dunes followed by dinner and a peaceful night under the desert sky.

Wake up early to enjoy sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes, one of the most memorable moments of a Sahara journey. After breakfast, spend the day exploring the Merzouga region at a relaxed pace.

Optional experiences can include a 4x4 excursion around the dunes, a visit to Khamlia village to discover Gnaoua music traditions, tea with nomadic families, sandboarding, a walk near the dunes or time to simply enjoy the silence of the desert. This second desert day allows you to experience Merzouga beyond a single overnight stay.

After breakfast, leave the Sahara and travel west through desert-edge landscapes, palm groves and traditional villages. The route can pass through Rissani, Alnif and Nkob, or continue toward the Draa Valley depending on the chosen pacing and accommodation.

This day offers a beautiful transition from the dunes to the oasis landscapes of southern Morocco. Stop for photos, local tea or a relaxed lunch along the way before settling into a kasbah-style guesthouse in Nkob or Agdz. The evening is quiet, with time to rest after the desert experience.

Leave Nkob or Agdz after breakfast and continue toward Ouarzazate, passing through palm groves, kasbah landscapes and open southern scenery. Depending on timing, stop for a short visit in Ouarzazate or enjoy viewpoints along the way.

Then cross the High Atlas Mountains again on the road back to Marrakech. The drive is long but scenic, with mountain passes, villages and changing landscapes throughout the day. Arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon or evening and settle back into your riad for the final night.

Enjoy your final morning in Marrakech depending on your flight schedule. You may have time for a last walk through the medina, a coffee on a rooftop, a visit to a garden or some final shopping in the souks.

Your private transfer takes you to Marrakech airport for departure. The journey ends with a complete introduction to southern Morocco: Marrakech, the High Atlas, Aït Ben Haddou, Dadès Valley, Todra Gorge, Merzouga dunes, desert camp life and oasis landscapes.
